Campus Bookstore Mission Statement
The Campus Bookstore is owned and operated by the Queen’s University
Engineering Society Services Incorporated. We endeavour to distribute
required course material at the lowest possible price to students while
operating a comprehensive university bookstore for the Queen’s University
community. The Bookstore will fulfill its mission by utilizing the input it
receives from the market it serves and by applying the highest quality of
management and service at every level of operation.
"Required" Textbook:
This is a book which is adopted for use in a course.
The use of the book should be critical to the success of the students in the
course, and the portion of the book used should be between 50% - 100%.
Students should be encouraged by the instructor to use the required textbook
in order to achieve success in the course.
Recommended Textbook:
This is a book which is adopted for use in a course.
The contents of the book should be complementary to the course content, even
though the use of the book is not critical to the success of students in the
course. Students should be notified by the instructor of the usefulness of
the recommended book as a reference tool.
www.campusbookstore.com:
This is the Bookstore’s Web address. You can use
this site to view your course adoptions, to adopt a book on-line, to print
desk-copy request forms, to read about custom CourseWare and to browse
through publishers’ catalogues. You can also search our 45,000 title
database.
Expected Enrollment Figure:
This is an estimate of the number of students
who will participate in the course. It can be derived from two sources: last
year’s enrollment figure and the maximum capacity number for the course.
Companion Materials:
Companion materials vary in their perceived value. A number of
instructors design or arrange packaged companion materials that are
intended as an integral part of the required course materials. In other
cases companion materials may be pre-packaged with the textbook with or
without the instructor's or bookstore's knowledge.
In both cases students will have difficulty utilizing used book markets
and will generally avoid purchasing materials without a strong
endorsement from the instructor. Please indicate if companion materials
are required, recommended or not necessary.
New Editions:
Textbooks change editions approximately every three years. If there are
minor differences, students will often access used book markets.
The bookstore can not purchase previous editions from publishers;
therefore, students will arrive at class with a mixture of editions.
Please indicate if the new edition of the textbook is required.
Used Book List Deadline:
This is the date that the Bookstore begins to
formulate its ‘used book list’. The sourcing of used books is critical to
our mission to provide students with required course material at the lowest
possible price. Our list is compiled from repeat adoptions; in other words,
it is made up of text books which have been used in the past and will be
used again in the next year/term. We are competing with other university
bookstores to access a very limited used book market, so any information
regarding repeat adoptions is greatly appreciated. The deadline for our
‘used book list’ is mid-March.
Textbook Deadline:
This is the date by which your textbook adoptions should
be submitted to the Bookstore. For Fall and Fall-Winter term courses, the deadline is
June 1st. For Winter term courses, the deadline is October 1st.

Reverse Discounting:
This is a policy in practice by some publishers
whereby the more units a customer (ie. the Bookstore) purchases, the higher
the unit cost. (Yes, we find it difficult to believe too!)
Return Penalty:
This is a restocking fee imposed by some publishers on
their customers, based on the percentage of purchases that are returned. The
Campus Bookstore returns approximately 20% of its textbook purchases to
publishers.
